Course Description:

The academic and professional success of underrepresented students has been strongly linked to mentorship (Secules, Gupta, Elby & Tanu, 2018). This course is designed to increase the importance and knowledge of culturally responsive mentoring in future faculty. Course participants will be introduced to best practices in mentoring graduate students, within the context of teaching, research, and professional development.


Instructor -- Dr. Martha Jallim Hall, an Associate Professor of Education, holds both a Doctor of Education and an Educational Specialist degree from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She also earned a Master of Arts in Counseling with a concentration in College Student Development, along with certification in School Counseling, and a Bachelor of Arts in Communicative Sciences and Disorders from Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia.


Previously, Dr. Jallim Hall served as Chair of the Department of Education and Coordinator of the Ph.D. in Educational Management program, where she played a crucial role in academic leadership. As Chair, she was responsible for overseeing all aspects of the department and its programs, including the Ph.D. in Educational Management, the Master of Teaching (M.T.), the Master of Arts in Educational Leadership, and the Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies/Elementary Education. Her leadership was instrumental in securing the successful reaffirmation of accreditation by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and the Virginia Department of Education in 2018. Additionally, as former Chair of the Department of Counseling, she co-led the revision and development of new programs in Pastoral Counseling, the Specialist in Education, and the Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision, contributing to the CACREP accreditation of the master’s in counseling programs.


As an Associate Professor, Dr. Jallim Hall teaches undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral courses in education. She also supervises, mentors, and directs doctoral students in their research studies. Notably, she serves as Co-Principal Investigator and Project Manager for a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant in collaboration with Howard, Hampton, and Morgan State Universities through the Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (HHMS-AGEP). Additionally, she holds the position of Senior Project Researcher at the Hampton University Toyota Financial Services Leadership Academy.


With over two decades of progressive experience in leadership, management, and teaching at the university level, Dr. Jallim Hall is a dynamic administrator whose career spans both national and international arenas. Her expertise includes teaching, dissertation research supervision, administration, student and academic support services, international programs, and counselor education.
