How To Mentor Graduate Students (MGS) Spring 2023

Instructor -- Dr. Kimberly McManus The academic and professional success of underrepresented students has been strongly linked to mentorship (Secules, Gupta, Elby  & Tanu, 2018). This course is designed to increase the importance and knowledge of culturally responsive mentoring in future faculty.  Course participants will be introduced to best practices in mentoring graduate students, within the context of teaching, research and professional development. We will use films and documentary  content to contextualize problems and solutions for STEM student mentoring allowing for whole-group discussions of diversity in STEM and the role of portraiture in developing self-efficacy beliefs in STEM. This course will also have  an experiential component, each registrant in the Course will be assigned a mentee and the mentorship skills will be evaluated by the mentee.
